Sofa or armchair? For most living rooms the honest answer is «both, in the right ratio»: the sofa carries the room's daily life, and armchairs add flexibility, character and a second focal point. The dilemma becomes real only when the space fits one of the two, and there it is your lifestyle that decides.
When the sofa wins
If your living room is the place for family evenings, films and stretching out, the sofa has no rival. For big families and frequent hosting, corner sofas give the most seats per square metre, and modular designs adapt to the room's layout.
And if you host overnight guests often, a sofa bed turns the living room into a bedroom in a minute: one piece, two rooms.
When armchairs win
The armchair is the most flexible piece in the living room: it moves towards the light for reading, turns towards the company when people are over, and passes through doors a sofa can only dream of. It is also where you can dare: a textured fabric or a deeper tone that would be too much on the sofa. See our living room armchairs.
The combination that always works
The classic recipe is a sofa plus one or two armchairs opposite or at 90 degrees, with the seats within conversation distance: no more than 2.5 to 3 metres apart. To make the whole tie together, keep three things in agreement: the same design language (clean lines with clean lines), the right proportion (next to a heavy sofa, lighter armchairs), and colour kinship: the sofa stays calm, the armchair can be the accent, as long as its tone repeats somewhere, in a cushion or a throw.
And if only one fits?

Frequently asked questions
- Should the armchair match the sofa's colour?
- No. Keep the sofa in a calm tone and let the armchair stand out, with its tone repeated in one small element of the room.
- How much distance between the seats?
- For comfortable conversation, 2.5 to 3 metres at most from seat to seat, with a free walkway of at least 80 centimetres around them.
- Same fabric on sofa and armchair?
- Not necessary. Different textures in the same palette, for example a smooth fabric on the sofa and bouclé on the armchair, add depth.
