Caring for linen: natural texture, a cool feel, and keeping it well

Linen is the coolest natural upholstery fabric you can put in a Cyprus home, and caring for it is simpler than it sounds: gentle regular vacuuming, immediate blotting when something spills, and protection from the harsh midday sun. The wrinkles and the little slubs in the weave are not defects, they are the character of the material.

Why linen suits the Cyprus climate

Linen is woven from flax fibres and breathes better than any other upholstery fabric. In a Limassol or Nicosia living room, where summer runs from May to October, it stays cool to the touch even at 35 degrees. It does not trap heat the way synthetics do, it wicks moisture away, and it grows softer with the years. A well-kept linen sofa honestly looks better at five years than in its first month.

The three-minute weekly routine

• Vacuum the fabric with the upholstery nozzle on low power once a week, so dust never works its way into the weave.
• Plump and rotate the cushions every two to four weeks, so wear and fading spread evenly.
• Air the room. Linen releases odours easily when air moves through it.

Spills: the first minutes decide

Blot anything spilled straight away with a dry white cloth, working from the edge of the stain towards the centre, without rubbing. Then mix lukewarm water with a little neutral soap, test it on a hidden spot first, and apply it gently with as little moisture as possible. Let the area dry naturally, away from hairdryers or radiators. Bleach, alcohol and harsh cleaners have no place on linen: they dry out the fibre and lift the colour.

Wrinkles: when to leave them, when to soften them

The lived-in, softly creased look is part of linen's charm. The most beautiful linen living rooms are never «ironed». If you prefer a neater look, pass gentle steam over the fabric from 15 to 20 centimetres away and smooth it with your palm. Never press an iron directly onto the sofa.

Sun and big windows

The Cyprus sun is the hardest opponent natural fibres have. If the sofa faces the window directly, a sheer curtain during the midday hours blocks most of the fading. Rotating the cushions helps here too: whatever fading happens is shared and stops being visible.

Linen with children and pets

If a cat's claw pulls a thread, snip it level with the weave using small scissors, never pull it out.
