For most people who wake with lower-back discomfort, the right answer is a medium-firm, consistently supportive mattress, tested in your real sleeping position. And the most common cause of the problem is the simplest one: an old mattress that has sagged. If the pain persists no matter what you change, speak to a doctor. A mattress helps, it does not cure.
Why the mattress affects your back
The spine wants to keep its natural curve during sleep too. On a mattress that is too soft, the hips sink and the lower back hangs as if in a hammock, eight hours every night. On one that is too firm, the shoulders and hips take the pressure and the waist is left in the air, without contact or support. In both cases, the muscles around the lower back work all night instead of resting.
The four types, with the back in mind
- Spring: steady, «traditional» support and good airflow. See the Aphro Angel orthopaedic anatomic mattress, two-sided so you choose the feel yourself.
- Memory foam: hugs the curves and spreads the pressure, ideal for side sleepers. See the Aphro Angel Memory Foam.
- Latex: a natural material with a resilient, «lively» feel and great longevity.
- Hybrid: springs at the base, foam layers on top: support and relief together. See the DELUXE orthopaedic anatomic mattress.
How to choose in practice
Three things decide the choice: your sleeping position (on the side you want a slightly softer surface for the shoulder, on the back or stomach a steadier one), your body weight (the higher it is, the steadier the mattress must be so the hips do not sink), and the age of your current mattress: if it has passed eight to ten years or shows a hollow, you have found the most likely culprit.
When testing, lie in the position you actually sleep in and stay five to ten minutes. Do the palm test: on your back, slide a hand under your waist. A big gap means the mattress is too firm, no room at all means too soft. And do not forget the pillow: the wrong pillow height undoes even the best mattress. At our Limassol showroom you can test at your own pace, by appointment.
Small habits that protect the back
Rotate the mattress head to foot every two to three months for even wear. If you sleep on your side, a pillow between the knees keeps the hips aligned. If you sleep on your back, a low pillow under the knees relaxes the lower back.
Frequently asked questions
- Firm or soft mattress for the back?
- Neither extreme. A medium-firm, consistently supportive mattress is the one most often recommended, because it keeps the spine in its natural line. The full logic is in our medium-firm guide.
- Will a new mattress solve my pain?
- If the culprit is a sagging, aged mattress, the difference is usually felt quickly. If the pain persists, speak to a doctor: the mattress is an ally, not a treatment.
- How do I buy one?
- With cash at a permanent discount, or in interest-free instalments of up to 12 months, no bank involved. Delivery is free across Cyprus and almost all mattresses are in stock.
